As an Engineer in the RAN Maritime Warfare Centre (MWC) you will apply and develop your engineering/scientific knowledge to operate and maintain complex systems and analyse data relating to platform signatures and threat susceptibility.

Our team is dedicated to reducing the susceptibility of our fleet to modern threats through the collection and analysis of underwater signatures using a variety of measurement facilities (Ranges). We don’t anticipate that you will start as a subject matter expert, however attention to detail and aptitude in learning data analysis techniques will be beneficial, and we commit to supporting you to develop and enhance your skills. This may include training on naval systems, signature analysis and mathematical modelling. We are also dedicated to fostering your career growth and will provide you opportunities to develop project management, Test & Evaluation and leadership skills which will help you achieve your professional goals.

This position will be required to access US export controlled materiel and therefore applicants will be requested to disclose any dual citizenship with another country during the recruitment process. Dual citizens may be subject to further assessment and appointment to this position will be conditional upon approval to access US controlled export material in accordance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. For further information, please contact the contact officer.

About our Team

The MWC mission is to optimise and improve the warfighting effectiveness and lethality of Australia’s maritime capability. This is achieved through the delivery of highly effective warfare products that support both the Fleet Commander and the Head of Navy Capability in the context of risk based decision making.

The teams you will be working in directly support this mission through test and evaluation activities including:

Developing analysis techniques and implementing them into our Range Systems.

Consolidating our existing Range Systems and subsequent evolution to suit the next generation of RAN Platforms.

Alignment of Signature Analysis techniques with Susceptibility Metrics and Military Standards.

Use and distribute data as the source of truth to inform decision making for the Fleet.

Come join a team which works collaboratively with Engineers from different disciplines, industry and Government, civilian and military, to understand, shape and improve warfighting capabilities across Navy.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in working for Navy and an ability to apply engineering/analytical skills to maintain and operate Ranges to measure vessel signatures, collect and analyse data and produce detailed written reports to help minimize the susceptibility of our fleet to contemporary threats. You will contribute to a culture of cooperation for development and sharing of knowledge whilst exercising initiative and judgement.

Candidates are sought with interest and aptitude in the following areas:

  1. Programming skills, including: general software development, process automation, databases, GUI’s, and signal processing.
  2. System Engineering skills for solving “multi domain” problems.
  3. Awareness of Defence procurement practices.
  4. Acoustic and Magnetic Signature analysis.
  5. Development and maintenance of Data acquisition and analytical systems and tools for system performance evaluation (e.g. software, hardware and data processing).
  6. Inspection, operation and evaluation of systems on board Naval Vessels in preparation for, and during, trials.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 24 May 2026
