The Role
Are you an engineer who wants to apply your propulsion systems knowledge to meaningful, safety-critical work? Join the Directorate of Aviation Engineering within the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) in Melbourne and help support the airworthiness and integrity of propulsion systems across a diverse and evolving Defence aviation environment.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute specialist engineering advice, support technical oversight, and help improve how propulsion risks are understood and managed across the Australian Defence Force aviation fleet.
You will work on complex engineering problems, analyse technical information, and provide clear advice to support sound safety and engineering decisions. The role offers variety, professional challenge and the chance to deepen your expertise in aircraft engines and propulsion system integrity.
You will have opportunities for domestic travel as part of engaging with stakeholders and supporting aviation safety outcomes across Defence.
About our Team
You will join a small, motivated, and professional team within the Defence Aviation Safety Authority providing specialist engineering advice and technical oversight for Australian Defence Force aviation engines. As a part of the Directorate of Aviation Engineering, you will work within a joint and blended workforce that brings together Navy, Army, Air Force, APS and contractor personnel, drawing on diverse operational and technical experience to strengthen propulsion system safety and engineering assurance across Defence.
Based in the heart of Melbourne, this role offers flexible working arrangements that support work-life balance, along with opportunities for ongoing professional development and exposure across multiple aircraft platforms. You will be supported to grow your technical capability and develop into a specialist in propulsion system integrity and aviation engineering assurance. Defence also provides relocation assistance to eligible APS employees required to relocate, with assistance varying depending on the reason for relocation and personal circumstances.
Our Ideal Candidate
An engineer with a strong interest in aircraft propulsion systems and a desire to contribute to aviation safety within a regulatory and assurance environment. Experience in gas turbine engines, aviation engineering, airworthiness, safety, sustainment or technical regulation will be highly regarded. Candidates who bring sound engineering judgement, critical thinking and a willingness to learn will be well suited to this role.
You will be able to analyse complex technical issues, apply evidence-based reasoning, and provide clear, practical advice in a safety-focused context. You will build productive working relationships across Defence and commercial organisations, work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, and communicate confidently with a range of audiences.
This includes translating complex technical and regulatory concepts into clear, credible and fit-for-purpose advice. This role will suit someone who enjoys solving challenging engineering problems, values continuous development, and wants to make a meaningful contribution to Defence aviation safety.
