Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Civil or Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the pump and water infrastructure sector. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands‑on engineering, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to the full lifecycle of pumping system projects — from concept design through to commissioning and documentation. The position is based at our office in Hobart, Tasmania. Applicants should be able to work from Hobart. Strong applicants will be considered for relocation allowances, pending successful completion of probation.
You’ll play a key part in delivering essential water infrastructure and pumping solutions that support communities, industry, and the environment. It’s a role for someone who enjoys both technical design and practical, real‑world engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the design and specification of pumping systems, pipework, and associated civil or mechanical components.
- Calculations associated with pump hydraulics.
- Drafting, drawing and modelling of pumps, pumping arrangements, pump stations and associated accessories.
- Assist with project labour planning.
- Pump selections and analysis.
- Reviewing of plans and technical data.
- Site project management roles, e.g. logistics & crane organisation.
- Supporting project estimators on buildability, design, cost and timing.
- Prepare, update, and maintain engineering documentation, including design reports, datasheets, and technical submissions.
- Develop and support the creation of training manuals, operation & maintenance documentation, and project handover packages.
- Ensure all drawings and documents comply with industry standards, project requirements, and internal quality systems (ISO 9001:2015).
- Provide engineering input during installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of pumping equipment.
- Liaise with construction teams, suppliers, and clients to resolve technical queries.
- Conduct site inspections, collect field data, and verify installation against design intent.
Who You Are
You are someone who enjoys problem-solving and can work independently or part of a team. You are not afraid to ask questions and have a willingness to learn, particularly if this industry is new to you. You have good time management, detail oriented, highly organised and take a “measure twice, cut once” approach to your work. You are looking to develop your career in the water industry and have a desire to take on a variety of work to expand your skillset.
Required Experience
- At least 2 years of experience in drawings / drafting
- Experience with CAD, Microsoft Office and Planner
- Have a strong understanding of relevant Australian Standards
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
- Eligibility to work in Australia
Desired Experience
- Experience in the water, wastewater, and / or irrigation industries
- Experience reviewing and approving drawings for construction
- Experience designing / fitting pump systems
- Demonstrated experience managing drafters
- Experience with an ISO 9001 Quality Management System
- Understanding of pump stations, pipelines, and water treatment processes
Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an Australian University (or overseas degree recognised by Engineers Australia)
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and produce engineering drawings
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work collaboratively in a project‑based environment
- Able to work to deadlines
- Strong problem-solving ability
