Assistant Director Digital Definition - (multiple positions)

The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

The Australian Submarine Agency’s Digital Engineering Branch are seeking suitably qualified and experienced personnel to fill two Assistant Director Digital Definition positions within the VCS and SSN-A Digital Definition directorates. Working to the respective directors, Assistant Director Digital Definition supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of digital engineering activities that enable Australian technical control of Australian flagged Nuclear Powered Submarines.

The Assistant Director Digital Definition will work under broad direction from Digital Definition directors, in collaboration with technical specialists and delivery partners, to:

1. Plan and coordinate digital engineering activities across VCS and SSN AUKUS work streams.
2. Develop and maintain schedules, milestones, delivery plans, and governance artefacts.
3. Translate technical requirements and strategy into structured, deliverable work packages.
4. Provide technical input to ASA and AUKUS partner planning, documentation and artefacts.
5. Monitor progress, manage risks, dependencies, and constraints, and escalate issues Coordinate across ASA, Defence, industry, and AUKUS partner organisations.
6. Support governance, assurance, reporting, and continuous improvement activities.

The Assistant Director Digital Definition will lead, plan, and deliver complex digital engineering coordination activities in support of:

1. Establishment and sustainment of the SSN Authoritative Source of Truth.
2. Integration of technical data, modelling, configuration management, and digital systems.
3. Alignment with AUKUS partner systems, processes, and digital environments.
4. Adoption of contemporary digital engineering practices, including MBSE and data driven delivery.
5. Delivery of assured, traceable, and well governed digital capability across the enterprise.
6. Assistant Directors are required to operate with sound judgement and a strong nuclear mindset, ensuring precision, accountability, and compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and ASA governance frameworks

The Digital Engineering Branch sits at the core of the ASA’s mission, building the digital backbone that will underpin sovereign technical control of Australia’s acquisition of conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines.

We foster a collaborative data and software ecosystem facilitating effective knowledge sharing across the AUKUS enterprise, from submarine design through to disposal.

Our team is responsible for designing and sustaining digital engineering environments, specialised software tools and digital definitions that connect science, engineering, construction, operation and sustainment into a single coherent ecosystem.

We work at the genuine frontier of what’s technically possible in Australia, applying emerging technologies such as AI, Machine Learning and evolving digital engineering practices including Model-Based Systems Engineering to novel problems in the Australian Defence context.

7. Demonstrated experience managing complex technical, engineering, digital, or data centric projects.
8. Strong engineering literacy, with the ability to understand, interpret, and communicate technical concepts accurately.
9. Proven ability to develop schedules, manage risks, track dependencies, and coordinate delivery across multidisciplinary teams.
10. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of executive level documentation and reporting.
11. Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgement, and attention to detail in high assurance or high consequence environments.
